Emulation

Project Emulation draws inspiration from nature’s ability for constant changes. Organic and artificial materials are in division. Tender bird feathers drown in silicon coating. Fake fur parts penetrate the symbiotic bacterium and yeast skin. The clothes grow on the body, bacteria grow into clothes. Transitory solutions like silicon tapes or metal clips allow the wearer to tuck the bamboo jersey and to shape different garments from the same pattern base. Such methods contravene traditional pattern making but elevate the garments to individuality. There is no perfect resolution, all figures stand a chance.

The grown material is a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, known as kombucha. The scoby, an organic mass of intergrown fibres, thrives on the surface of clean sugary black tea. The body of this symbiotic matter takes the shape of any container it’s living in, thus the size of the final material can be optionally changed. When the scoby reached the right sickness (around 2 cm) its washed and dried. To prevent the fabric from drying out completely, bee wax can be used to maintain its flexibility.
